Web design agency vs website subscription: what's the real difference?
A web design agency charges thousands upfront (typically $5,000 to $20,000 and up) for strategy, custom design, copywriting and project management. A website subscription is a flat monthly fee, about $50, with no upfront cost, and the provider handles the build and any changes.
That's the choice most owners are facing, and neither option feels quite right. An agency quote can read like a bill for a job you don't have. A generic subscription or DIY builder hands you a template and a blank editor, and the work lands back on you.
We think a managed subscription is the middle path: DIY-level monthly money, a done-for-you result, and someone to call when something needs changing. Small businesses don't have a $15,000 problem. They need a good-looking site that works, so we build that.
Who is each model right for, and who is Topos not for?
When an agency earns its fee
A web design agency is worth it when the job is complex: a twenty-staff company, a big budget, strategy workshops, custom functionality. At $5,000 to $20,000 and up, you're paying for process, and some businesses need that process.
It's also where ecommerce, user accounts and payment systems belong. We don't build those, so if that's your project, an agency is the right call and we're not the right fit.
When it's overkill
A cafe, tradie or solo professional typically needs about five pages that load fast, look right on a phone and make it easy to call. That's not a $15,000 problem. A website subscription covers it: custom-designed, hosting included, live in about a week for a flat $50/month.
For a plumber, electrician, accountant or physio, one extra customer a month pays for the site many times over. Your hours stay on the tools or with clients.
A simple rule for choosing
If the business is an experiment, build it yourself. If it's real and customers check you online before they call, get it done right.
You can edit your own text and images whenever you like, and we handle changes if you'd rather not. Our optional SEO backlinking add-on is extra, and we don't promise rankings.
